Monthly News Brief

CST READIED FOR LARGER CRANES – The Ports Authority Board yesterday approved a $5.15 million contract to provide structural improvements to the Columbus Street Terminal wharf. This work is required for the operation of 100-foot gauge container cranes along 2,700 feet of dock and will be completed over 18 months. Four 100-foot gauge cranes are planned for delivery by July 2003. Republic Contracting of Columbia submitted the winning bid.

NCT IMPROVEMENTS – A $1.3 million contract was also approved for Island Construction Company of Charleston to upgrade six acres of container storage at the North Charleston Terminal. Most of the area will be excavated, reinforced and paved with asphalt. Portions of the improved area will also be marked with 750 grounded and 25 wheeled slots.

PROPERTY TRANSFERRED – To facilitate the widening of Long Point Road from I-526 to the Wando Welch Terminal, the Authority will sell 2.27 acres of property in Mount Pleasant to the SCDOT. This project will enhance access to the Wando Welch Terminal and other properties on Long Point Road. Also, to support the relocation of Pinefield Road on Saint Thomas Island, 0.25 acres of property will be conveyed to Berkeley County.

STATE-OF-THE-PORT – The Propeller Club of the Port of Charleston’s State-of-the-Port Address and South Carolina Products Display will be held Thursday, October 25, at the Passenger Terminal in Downtown Charleston. The reception and display begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for members, $40 for non-members and $280 for a table of eight. GOLF OUTING – The Propeller Club will host a Golf Outing at Patriots Point Links on October 25 at 11:30 a.m. The captain’s choice tournament is $80 per person or $320 per team, including lunch, beverage cart, greens fees and prizes. For a registration form, contact Karie Crowther at 843-577-8121.

RADIO SPOTS – Last week the South Carolina State Ports Authority launched an advertising campaign on seven local radio stations that will run through the week of November 5. The five, 60-second spots feature the Port’s positive involvement in the community. The tagline on all five ads is, "Proud that the Port Works for Everyone." They can be heard on the following stations – FM105.3, FM103.5, FM101.7, FM104.5, AM730, FM96.9 and FM102.5.

RECORD UNITED WAY – More than 420 SPA employees in Charleston contributed $57,563 to the Trident United Way in our recent campaign – an increase of more than 40% from last year and an all-time record. In five years, giving has quadrupled and the number of contributors has doubled. By contributing to United Way, we are giving back to the community and helping to meet the region’s growing needs.
