Monthly News Brief
The Ports Authority Board today approved four contracts covering nearly $2 million in new equipment, services and improvements to existing facilities:
- The Authority will purchase three container handlers from Gregory Poole Equipment of North Charleston for $720,000. Within 90 days, two 4-high full container handlers and one 7-high empty handler will replace existing equipment at the Columbus Street Terminal, where COSCO, K-Line and Yang Ming are major customers.
- Electrical service upgrades will be performed on a 33-acre container storage yard at the North Charleston Terminal, which includes155 refrigerated container plugs, seven high-mast lights and several office and maintenance areas. Under the $361,752 contract, Atlantic Electric Company of Charleston will construct a 5,000-volt distribution system.
- Konecranes America will replace the trolley rails on the three Morris post-panamax container cranes at the Wando Welch Terminal. The contract, which totals $414,000, will replace the high-wear area on the cranes that result in a hard ride for operators.
- The Authority will also reimburse SCE&G $430,505 over three years for the construction of a substation adjacent to the Columbus Street Terminal. The substation was built to serve the two new Paceco post-panamax cranes that were delivered in 1998.
